Pumpkin Patch Service Party

It’s one of the first signs that the fall season really is here and it’s more predictable than the weather. Despite retailer’s attempts since late July, when folks start to see pumpkin patches popping up around the area they know that autumn and the holiday season have truly arrived.

Unloading 48 pallets of pumpkins from a semi truck, 60 members and missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seguin helped to set up a pumpkin patch.

The pumpkin patch is part of the Seguin’s First United Methodist Church’s annual landscape. School children will make their yearly pilgrimage to the pumpkin patch, along with other groups and families. There is a reading area for story time, and of course, a place to get those great family pictures!

The First United Methodist Church’s pumpkin patch is a big fundraiser in Seguin that benefits the entire community. The funds raised go to several local charities. No one leaves the pumpkin patch empty handed. If they don’t or can’t purchase a pumpkin, they get to choose one of the hundreds of little pumpkins…that seriously are cute!

“What a great way to start our General Conference weekend!” said Bishop Tim Bird of the Church of Jesus Christ’s Seguin congregation. The members and missionaries were able to get in a lot of early morning exercise before sitting the rest of the day for Saturday’s three sessions of Conference.

The group from the Seguin congregation will again help out their neighbors at the Methodist Church on the 15th of October when another truck load of pumpkins arrive from New Mexico. The second shipment of pumpkins will see them through until the 31st.

“The pumpkin patch has been a wonderful Seguin tradition for years! We’re so grateful to be able to help this year!” said Bishop Bird. By the time everyone was through, the pumpkin patch was worthy of Charlie Brown’s friend Linus waiting for the “Great Pumpkin”
